Snapshot
This is a little shell script that we have written for our clients who are running Mac OS X Tiger, so they can put snapshot backups onto external hard disks. (Leopard users can use Time Machine) Snapshot backups have all the advantages of full backups but only take the space of incremental backups. Rsync and hard-links allow this magic to happen! Yet another advantage of Mac OS X and UNIX.
Instructions- Download the snapshot.command file (linked below) to your Desktop
- Move the snapshot.command file to your Applications folder. Chmod it to 755
- To create a shortcut, drag it from Applications to the Finder sidebar
- Your external destination volume will need to be named "external"
- Get Info on "external" and make sure "ignore permissions on the volume" is unchecked
- Create a folder called /Volumes/external/backups/hostname
- Make sure your external disk is mounted before running Shapshot
- Shapshot will backup the Users folder and the System/Library/Fonts folder.
